We did it! London to Sydney overland! Including driving 37,000+ kms!
But now it feels weird. We were dropped outside the iconic opera house and then everyone went their own way to the their own hotels. And that was it. No more group. No more politics. No more horrendous group meals. Just us. How strange!
It felt good though. But it wasn't long before we realised how good the comfort of the group had been and how we liked them organising things...
We wandered up to our hostel only to find out that it has a lunch break lasting for 4 hours and we had just arrived 10 minutes after the start of it! So with 4 hours to kill and limited enthusiasm to walk too far with our bags, we basically grabbed some food and went to have a nap in the botanical gardens!
After some much needed sleep and ditching our bags in our shoebox room, we thought we would pop down to a local church. It was a C3 church (a bit like hillsong) and it was strange to be singing carols in shorts and t-shirts but we embraced it and even befriended a trapeze artist! It was an amazing time of worship and a great reminder of how lucky we are.
That evening we popped down to circular keys to have another nosey at the opera house and the bridge! We even managed to catch a light show on the side of the cathedral!
The next day though, after meeting up with Cat and picking up our hire car ready for the next day, it was time to tick something off the bucket list: climb the harbour bridge!
To sum this experience up would be difficult but it was absolutely amazing. We walked up in the daylight, saw sunset at the top and walked down in the dark with the city lights glowing beneath us! The whole thing took 4 hours and we would highly recommend it to anyone! We can now list off several facts about the bridge but that would bore you all to tears but I'll let you in on one.
When they built the bridge, it was built wide enough for 2 train lines, 2 tram lines and for 4 lanes of cars. This seems entirely reasonable until you realise that when it was built there were only 5 cars in the whole of Australia and just 1 in Sydney! What incredible foresight!
Anyway, talking of cars, we are off on a road trip next!
